Destructive Fishing: Seribu Islands
Seribu Islands National Park is the only national park in the world that located in a country’s capital city. 105 very small (micro) islands lie just in front of Jakarta mainland – with all the big cities’ problems. Populated by 15,600 of people, the islands’ main ecosystem is the coral reefs – which hold very high pressure. Jakarta is the main gate for coral reef & ornamental fishes’ trading in Indonesia, with Seribu Islands is the primary source. High demand from industrial countries (USA, Europe, & Japan) had lead Seribu Islands to over exploitation in coral reefs & ornamental fishes. It forces the fishers to use destructive fishing methods; cyanide fishing & corals’ over harvesting happened here once, and probably still do. The destruction of coral reefs will lead us to fisheries crisis – something that we should think about.
